One fan of ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’ said that he can’t be ‘the only one’ who found that the Divine Beast Vah Rudania reminded him of the Demogorgon from ‘Stranger Things,’ prompting other fans to jump in and agree.

2 min readIn The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Vah Rudania acts as one of the four Divine Beasts, massive magic-mechanical creatures Link uses to defeat Calamity Ganon. After Link defeats Fireblight Ganon, the machine takes its place on Death Mountain, its face opening to reveal a powerful laser. However, Vah Rudania’s face opening reminded several Legend of Zelda fans on Reddit of the Demogorgon from Stranger Things.
Fans drew visual similarities between Vah Rudania in ‘BOTW’ and the Demogorgon from ‘Stranger Things’
While the two powerful beings seem like they have little to nothing in common, they have a few similarities. Both use brute strength to get what they want and much of their creation remains shrouded in mystery.
However, what Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild fans on Reddit noticed came purely from visual similarities between Vah Rudania and the Demogorgon.
After Link and Yunobo scale Death Mountain, they confront the monstrous Vah Rudania under the control of Calamity Ganon. Link dives into the volcano to battle Fireblight Ganon and free Daruk’s trapped spirit. With Daruk back in control of Vah Rudania, he targets the corrupt Hyrule Castle, with the machine’s face splitting open.
“There’s no way I’m the only one who thought Vah Rudania’s open face made it look like a Demogorgon face,” the poster said.
Other Stranger Things fans jumped in the comments, saying that they thought the exact same thing.
In ‘Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,’ Vah Rudania has a design based on a salamander
While it seems unlikely that Nintendo would take inspiration from Stranger Things and the Demogorgon, the BOTW weapon has its roots in a real-life animal.
According to old legends, salamanders were said to be fireproof. This made for the perfect animal to base Vah Rudania on. It crawls around the volcano Death Mountain to the north of Hyrule Castle.
Of course, a salamander’s face does not split open into six sections.
Similarly, the Demogorgon, when it unleashes a fearsome sound, its head splits into five sections
However, Vah Rudania in Breath of the Wild was not the only Nintendo Switch game to draw comparisons from fans.
One fan noted that ‘Metroid: Dread’ had creatures resembling the Stranger Things Demogorgon
Besides Vah Rudanian in Breath of the Wild, fans have also pointed out similar creatures in Metroid: Dread.
Sure enough, bosses like Drogya and Experiment No. Z-57 has the same kind of Stranger Things ‘face-splitting’ design for Samus to fight.
However, the robotic Red Chozo Soldier drew the most attention for its similarities to the Demogorgon. Not only does its face split open with a dangerous spear, but it walks upright like the Stranger Things monster.
However, whether it is Link facing down Vah Rudania in BOTW, Samus battling a soldier in Metroid: Dread, or Will Byers surviving the Demogorgon in Stranger Things, the heroes always manage to succeed.
