How Much Did Martha Stewart Make on Her Tag Sale?

Publish date: 2024-06-12

When Martha Stewart sold her East Hampton estate and closed her Manhattan office, she had a lot of things she didn't need. She decided to have a tag sale event to benefit charity, and she made almost one million dollars.

Martha Stewart, known for her gourmet menus, cookbook, and cooking TV show "Martha Knows Best," started her career as a model when she was 13.

Before focusing on her lifestyle brand, she went to college to study European and architectural history, worked as a stockbroker, and now owns many businesses.

In April 2022, the TV personality hosted her first-ever yard sale, and lots of famous faces showed up to support her. Celebrities like Blake Lively, Sunny Hostin, Kris Jenner, Joy Behar, and more stopped by Stewart's home.

The yard sale was part of a new ABC special titled "The Great American Tag Sale With Martha Stewart." The special would see Stewart part ways with pieces from her vast art collection, housewares, and furniture.

WHAT WAS MARTHA STEWART'S SALE ABOUT?

Being a borderline hoarder, Stewart had a tag sale at her Katonah, NY, farm and put up for sale thousands of items that she had collected over the years.

She revealed that some of the things she was letting go of were beautiful pieces of art and clothing, fantastic shoes, kitchen items, lots and lots of silverware and flatware, and bakelite.

For Stewart, decluttering her home was not only about creating more space but also about raising money for the Martha Stewart Center For Living at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Inspired by her mother, the comprehensive care center was opened to provide holistic living services to older adults and help them live healthy and more engaged lives.

The sale raised over $800,000 for the center. Stewart believes that health care workers who continue to work through the pandemic deserve a public display of support and money.

IS MARTHA RETIRING?

The 80-year-old lifestyle guru, born on August 3, 1941, is not ready to retire. During an interview where the term "coastal grandmother" was brought up, Stewart said she could never be one of those.

A "coastal grandmother" is a term TikToker Lex Nicoleta uses to describe people who love Nancy Meyers movies, coastal vibes, cooking, recipes, Ina Garten, interiors, and more.

Stewart believed none of those applied to her because she is different from the women in Nancy Meyers' movies. She said:

"I could never be in those [Nancy Meyers] movies. I work every day! I'm not retired yet; maybe when I retire in 20 years ... maybe."

Even though Stewart does not see herself as a coastal grandmother, she is familiar with its aesthetics and has embodied many of the trend's tenets for decades.

Stewart is proud to be a grandmother and believes the secret to aging gracefully and having energy is homemade green juice. As she has no plans of retiring soon, she is moving forward with her business ventures.

She recently celebrated the launch of a new glassware collection in partnership with Baccarat, inspired by Skylands, her home in Maine.
