With his expertise in the entertainment industry as a singer/songwriter, actor, documentary filmmaker and record producer, many find it surprising to learn that one of the kings of 21st century beachside pop/rock, Jack Johnson was a former professional surfer. Are you surprised too? Yes, the Hawaiian native started chasing waves when he was very small and by the age of 17 he was an exceptional and well-known athlete on the Banzai Pipeline (surf reef break in Hawaii).

Johnson has always had an interest in other surfing – particularly in music and acting and after suffering a very serious injury in his first professional surfing competition he began to pay more attention to his other talents and at his leisure. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) in 1997 with a BA in Film Studies, he devoted himself full-time to music; Besides singing, Jack also wrote songs and his first five albums were major hits which all reached platinum status.

His biography

Jack was born in North Shore, Oahu, Hawaii on May 18, 1975. He attended Kahuku High School on Oahu and then the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), where he graduated with a degree in film studies in 1997. Jack Hody Johnson started out as a surfer. Growing up in an area where surfing was common, it was only natural for the youngster to be interested in the sport. Jack started chasing the waves when he was five years old.

At 17, he became the youngest surfer to make it to the finals of one of surfing’s most prestigious events, on Oahu’s North Shore – Pipeline Masters. It was, however, his last surfing event as a professional, due to a surfing accident during the competition which left him with no less than 150 stitches on his forehead. He also lost some teeth in this accident which would later become an inspiration for one of his songs – Drink Water.

Career

After a surfing accident ended his surfing career, Jack decided to make a career out of his hobbies. He started by making cinematography and then music. He learned to play the guitar at age eight and began developing his writing skills at age twelve. In college, Jack Johnson, together with two of his friends (Emmett Malloy and Chris Malloy), produced a documentary based on surfing, called Thicker Than Water

The documentary not only showcased Johnson’s talent as a director and songwriter (most of the documentary’s soundtracks being his tunes), Surfer magazine listed it in the Video category of the year. This also spawned Jack’s second surf film titled The September Sessions and he began to receive notice for most of his songs – one of which was covered by Pennsylvania alternative hip-hop group G. Love & Special Sauce on their 1999 album – Philadelphonic. After that he had a demo which caught the attention of French producer JP Plunier. With the help of Plunier, he released his first album, Brushfire Fairy Tales in 2001.

Ben Harper made a guest appearance on the album which sparked a friendship between the two singers and he joined Harper’s Innocent Criminals tour in the US Jack returned to the studio in late 2002 after touring the country in the first half and the following year (2003), he released his second album – Encore et encore. Despite its many similarities to his debut album, One and One was also hugely successful.

Jack released five more albums between 2003 and 2017; namely Between dreams which arrived in 2005, two years after Sur et sur, sleeping through statics came three years later (2008), À la mer in 2010, From Here to Now to You in 2013 and his last album All Light Above also came out in 2017.

His album In Between Dreams was at No. 2 on the chart in 2005 and reappeared again in 2013. Jack wrote the Sing-A-Longs and Lullabies soundtrack for the 2006 film Curious George, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Card of 200.
