Julie Andrews Loved Emily Blunt In 'Mary Poppins Returns'

The nanny has spoken: Julie Andrews has officially given her seal of approval to Mary Poppins Returns, the new follow-up to her Oscar-winning 1964 Disney musical smash. “She’s seen it, she said, ‘I loved it’ in huge capital letters, and the email that she sent was literally, I can’t tell you how long [it was],” the film’s director, Rob Marshall, recently gushed to the Press Association, noting that Julie, 83, singled out star Emily Blunt for special praise.

“She said Emily was wonderful, she loved her voice, she loved every single person in the cast. She was just over the moon about the whole thing. I was relieved and thrilled,” Rob added. In a word, Julie found the movie supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Unlike Julie’s former co-star Dick Van Dyke who made a cameo in Mary Poppins Returns, Julie decided to leave the acting to Emily and just watch the flick when it hit theaters in mid-December 2018. In a previous interview with Variety, Emily recalled Julie being “very hands-off with the whole thing.”

She said, “There was discussion that maybe she would come and do a bit in the movie, and she was so generous, actually. She said to Rob, ‘Do you know what this is? This is Emily’s version of her and I don’t want it to be that she’s playing Mary Poppins the whole way through, but then I come in and there’s, like, oh, but there’s the real Mary Poppins.'”

Emily enjoyed playing the whimsical nanny so much that she previously appeared on CBS Sunday Morning and said that she’s already on-board for a sequel. “Yes. I want to be her again. I like being her,” Emily gushed to Anthony Mason and said that her character is “completely bizarre and unknowable.” Whether Disney decides to make another sequel or not, Mary Poppins will still be one of our favorite movies!
